Pastor Emeritus Robert J. Matthews

Pastor Emeritus Robert J. Matthews is a respected music educator, choir director, church musician, and servant-leader whose influence has been felt throughout Memphis and the Mid-South for more than five decades. A graduate of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, where he majored in Vocal Music and English, he was a member of the renowned Vesper Choir and toured extensively across the western United States. He later earned a Master of Education in Administration and Supervision from the University of Memphis.

For over 30 years, Dr. Matthews served as a Music and English educator in Memphis City Schools, retiring in 2003 as Choir Director of Fairley High School. His commitment to musical excellence and mentorship inspired countless students and helped cultivate a love for sacred and choral music in generations of young people.

In addition to his distinguished career in education, Dr. Matthews faithfully served as Pastor of New Hope Baptist Church in Memphis from 1990 until his retirement and now holds the honored title of Pastor Emeritus. His lifelong passion for music, ministry, and Christian education continues to inspire audiences, choirs, and worship leaders alike.
